How does a seed grow? First, a seed falls off of a plant. Second, the seed is buried in the soil. Third, the seed bulges out because of water and then the aleurone cells turn green. Fourth, the germ inside of the seed grows and the seed spits open. The tail on the seed is the root and it goes down. Fifth, the plant grows above the ground and the endosperm gets eaten up. Sixth, the first leaves come out and the endosperm is all eaten up and it falls off. Seventh, the plant makes a flower and a butterfly lands on it to drink nectar and fertilizes the flower. Eighth, the flower turns into seed pods and a seed falls off the plant. The lotus seed can stay under the ground for 2,000 years without sprouting.
Seed Germination by Noah Arthur
Describe the parts of a seed? The inside of the seed has something called endosperm. It is food for the part of the seed in the inside called the germ. The germ is the part of the seed that will become the plant. The next layer is called the aleurone cells. They turn green and start growing first because being green lets the plant make its own food from light. The last part is called the seed coat.

What did we want to find out about seed germination? We wanted to find out the way seeds grow. We also wanted to know how seeds know to grow up even though they don't have brains. We wanted to see if the direction of the seed when it is planted in the ground matters. We wanted to see if seeds sprout up because of light. We wanted to see if seeds grow up because of gravity. Finally, we wanted to figure out if the size of the seed effects the plant. We made experiments to find these things out. We were successful.

What ways can start a seed to sprout? One way to start a seed to sprout is cracks and scratches. Another is water. And another is cold winter time. And another is light. Seeds with thick coats can sprout by getting eaten and pooped out again. Some seeds with thick coats like coconuts get bashed around in the water. Some other seeds have their seed coats freeze and crack.
Experiment 1. We planted seeds in different pots of dirt in different directions to find out if the direction the seed is pointing is the reason it sprouts up. We planted two seeds pointed up in one container. Then we planted two seeds pointed down in another container. Finally, we planted two seeds pointing sideways in a container. This picture is of the experiment after the seeds grew. Up is the one on the left. Down is the one in the middle. Sideways is on the right. They always grow straight up even if planted in different directions. The direction of the seed does not effect how the plant grows.

Experiment 2. We planted two seeds in one box and put black paper around the box except the bottom and we put a light underneath. We planted two seeds in another box and we wrapped black paper all around it except the top. We did these thing to see if light effected the direction of the sprouting. In the first box both seeds grew straight up. In the second box both seeds grew straight up. Seeds grow straight up no matter where the light is.

Experiment 3. We planted two seeds in a box on one side of a record player. We planted two more seeds in another box on the other side of the record player. We planted two seeds in a box by the record player. We planted seeds on a record player because if gravity effects the direction of the sprouting, the record player spinning will too. Why? Gravity is a force that pulls down toward the center of the earth. The spinning record player makes a force that pulls the seeds straight out from the middle of the record player. If force is the reason seeds grow up, seeds on a spinning record player will sprout up a little bit and toward the middle a little bit, up because gravity pulls down, and toward the middle because spinning on a record player pulls straight out. Daddy took me out to our neighbor's yard and spun me around for a minute by my ankles and I found out that my head was pulled straight out. He spun me around to show me what happens to the seeds on the record player. We planted seeds by the record player to see that they don't lean because they are not spinning. The seeds on the record player leaned toward the middle. They spun on the record player for 11 days. The seeds by the record player after 11 days just grew straight up. We found out that gravity because it's a force causes seeds to grow up.

Experiment 4. We planted four of the smallest seeds in the box on the right. We planted four of the average seeds in the box in the middle. We planted four of the biggest seeds in the box on the left. The biggest seeds grew the smallest plants. The average seeds grew medium sized plants. The smallest seeds grew the tallest plants. The biggest seeds sprouted two plants. The average seeds sprouted three plants. The smallest seeds sprouted three plants too. The smallest seeds are the healthiest and the biggest seeds are the least healthy.

How did we sort the seeds by size? We put a piled up line of seeds on the table and moved the biggest seeds on the right and the smallest seeds on the left.
Why does a seed grow up? Seeds grow up because of gravity. We figured it out by doing these experiments. Does the size of the seed effect the health of the plant? Yes, the smallest seeds grew the healthiest plants.
